My Droll - Committed to Bringing True News and Latest News

It is no secret that Tata Motors is working on a new petrol engine for their Safari and Harrier. There have been multiple test mules spotted till now. A white coloured Safari with an emission testing kit was recently spotted near Pune-Mumbai expressway’s Khalapur toll plaza.

As we can see from the pictures that there will no visual differences to the petrol version of the Safari. The same is true for Harrier also. It seems like it is a lower variant of the Safari because there are blacked-out door handles and roof rails.

The petrol engine that Tata Motors will be using is a 1.5-litre unit that will be turbocharged. It shares some of the components with the 1.2-litre turbocharged petrol engine that we have seen on the Nexon and Altroz. However, it now gets an extra cylinder. So, it is now a four-cylinder engine instead of three.

It is being said that the power output of the engine will be around 160 bhp.  We expect that the torque output could be around 250 Nm considering that the Harrier and Safari are big SUVs and would require at least this much torque. As mentioned above, we do know that the engine will get turbocharging but it is not known whether there will be direct injection or not.

As standard, there would be a 6-speed manual gearbox on offer. We are also expecting that Tata Motors would offer some kind of automatic gearbox. It could be a 6-speed torque converter unit or a new dual-clutch gearbox. The DCT could be a 6 or a 7-speed unit.

The new turbo petrol engine will decrease the starting price of both the SUVs. As of now, the Harrier starts at Rs. 14.65 lakhs and goes up to Rs. 21.95 lakhs. On the other hand, Safari starts at Rs. 15.25 lakhs and goes up to Rs. 23.46 lakhs. All the prices are ex-showroom.

The engine will be used for new SUV

The same new turbo petrol engine will also be used for an upcoming mid-size SUV that will be positioned between the Nexon and Harrier. The new SUV is internally being called Blackbird.

Earlier, it was based on the ALFA platform that the manufacturer is using for the Altroz and Punch. However, now the new SUV is based on Nexon’s X1 platform. They have made changes to the wheel geometry to extend the wheelbase and open more space in the cabin.

In fact, the production version of the SUV is already being shown. It is called Curvv and was showcased as an EV. The reason behind this is that the Blackbird will go on sale first as an electric vehicle. The internal-combustion powered versions will be launched later on. The Blackbird will be an SUV-Coupe which we have not yet seen in this price range. Interestingly, Mahindra is also working on a SUV Coupe version of the XUV700.
