Cyan Racing unveiled the resto-mod Volvo P1800 back in 2020, and in Europe, it was available to order shortly thereafter. Two years later, Cyan is also bringing the P1800 to the U.S. market. It will be presented to both media and the public in Los Angeles at The Quail, a Motorsports Gathering on August 9. The only problem is that the Cyan P1800 won’t be cheap. On the British market, it is priced at £379,000 (about $476,000 at the current exchange rates), but for the U.S. market, prices will start from an eye-watering $700,000!
So, What exactly can you buy for $700,000 on the U.S. market? For example, the Ferrari SF90 Stradale is priced at $625,000, while the most expensive version of the 812 - the Competizione is priced at $601,567. Or, if you want to buy a Lamborghini you can get the Roadster version of the Aventador Ultimae for $546,847. There is no doubt that you can find a very nice-looking supercar for the same money Cyan is asking for its P1800.
The car is no doubt a modern interpretation of the famous Volvo P1800 of the 1960s. And speaking of famous, the P1800 became widely known thanks to the British actor Roger Moore who was driving one in the television series The Saint. Also, a P1800 owned by Irv Gordon (1940–2018) entered the Guinness world book of records for highest mileage.
Cyan wanted to keep the essence of the classic car but update it with modern technology. Unlike many other automakers, it decided the P1800 will be better without an electric motor. Instead, it went for the same engine found in the Volvo S60 TCI race car: a 2.0-liter turbocharged four-cylinder engine that delivers a total of 420 horsepower and 336 pound-feet of torque. A five-speed manual transmission sends power to the two rear wheels and a limited-slip differential.
From the original P1800, Cyan only kept the original chassis, hood release mechanism, handbrake, and windshield wipers. However, all the underpinnings have been refined and reinforced with high-strength steel and carbon fiber. While all these changes make the Cyan P1800 a lot more rigid, it also makes it lighter: the car tips the scales at just 2180 pounds (990kg) – unlike the original P1800 rated at 2,491 – 2,590 pounds (1,130 – 1,175 kilos). When compared to the original P1800, the Cyan version also features a wider track, larger wheels, and a repositioned greenhouse. Also, in the Cyan version, the cabin was moved slightly rearwards resulting in a slightly longer hood that gives the impression of a more sporting silhouette. The cabin is also equipped with modern equipment, like Recaro sports seats and digital instrumentation specially manufactured for the Volvo P1800 Cyan project.
The car rides on 18-inch center locking wheels wrapped in Pirelli P Zero tires. The braking system features four-piston calipers at both ends and steel discs that measure 14.2 inches (362 mm) at the front and 13 inches (330 mm) in the back. Each car can be specially designed based on individual design, and the car’s design allows it to be tailored into anything from a lightweight, high-performance cafe racer to a grand tourer. According to Cyan, each car will be “created to fulfill the desire to own and drive a totally unique and personal car.”
