Porsche unveils the new 911 GT3 R Type 992 which takes over from the 911 GT3-R Type 991.2. It will make its debut in 2023 in all GT3 categories and from 2024 in the FIA World Endurance Championship WEC.
With the latest generation of the 911 GT3 R, Porsche unveils the new racing frame for customer competition. It will survey the GT3 categories around the world, this 911 GT3 is based on the current generation 992. It takes inspiration from the 911 GT3 Cup and the 911 RSR.
The car will race in the IMSA WeatherTech SportCar championship from 2023 and will make its first laps at the 24 Hours of Daytona like its big sister, the Porsche 963 LMDh, which will race in the premier GTP category.
It will also be seen in the FIA World Endurance Championship from 2024, meaning the car will be able to compete in the 24 Hours of Le Mans for the first time, when the GT3 makes its debut there.
Development began in 2019 and priority was given to improving handling for professionals and gentlemen drivers, as well as exploiting greater performance reserves for the different Balance of Performance classifications ( Bop).
« The new 911 GT3 R has big ambitions »says Michael Dreiser, Sales Director of Porsche Motorsport. “His predecessor has won almost everything there is to win on the GT3 stage in four seasons since 2019. Her notable successes include overall wins in the 24 Hour races at the Nürburgring and also here at Spa-Francorchamps. «
« In the hands of the greatest drivers, it has won class victories at the 24 Hours of Daytona and the 12 Hours of Sebring. The new model has to cope with a considerable workload in the hands of Porsche customer competition teams . »
“We hit the mark with the previous car, which was hugely successful, so the bar is high for its heiress.”underlines Sebastian Golz, 911 GT3 R project manager at Porsche Motorsport. « Our task was less to make the new 911 GT3 R even faster (the BoP is quickly undoing this advantage), but above all to make it easier for our customers to drive the car for longer. »
« That requires longevity behind the wheel and that’s why we focused primarily on improving handling. This is reflected in the wider usable rev band of the new 4.2-litre engine, in the aerodynamics more stable and consistent and in the lower loads on the rear tyres, which allows them to have a longer life. »
At the heart of the new machine is the near-standard engine based on the engine of the 911 of the 992 generation. four-valve technology and direct fuel injection.
The main novelty lies in the engine capacity: as with the 911 RSR, the capacity of the new 911 GT3 R has increased by 5%, from 3,997 to 4,194 cc3. The engine power has thus been increased to approximately 416 kW (565 hp). But Porsche has above all optimized the torque and power curve over the entire rev range. Therefore, the new 4.2-liter 6-cylinder is better suited to gentlemen drivers.
The engine is placed, as you would expect, at the rear of the 911 GT3 R, but it has been angled forward by 5.5° in order to create more space for the diffuser. Auxiliary components were moved forward and down into the space in front of the engine, which had a positive effect on the weight balance.
Gear changes are provided by a 6-speed sequential gearbox, derived from the racing 911 GT3 Cup. The driver selects gears using paddles behind the steering wheel that control an electronic gear actuator for quick and precise shifts.
The suspension has also been modified, starting at the front with state-of-the-art double wishbones and at the rear with a multi-link design. The shocks are sourced from KW and are designed to be easily adjustable. Adjustment changes can be made using shims that do not require tedious realignment of the suspension after each adjustment. This was all done in an effort to make the racing car easier to use.
Monobloc aluminum brake calipers and discs are supplied by AP. The 390mm front discs are slotted and vented, made of steel and squeezed by six-piston calipers. The rear discs, meanwhile, measure 370mm in diameter and feature four-piston calipers. Almost all of the body panels are carbon fiber.
The positioning of the central pivot points of the front axle, meanwhile, frees up more space for the aerodynamic concept. As on the 911 RSR, the 911 GT3 R features a raised underbody which allows more air to channel and reach the diffuser and reduces the car’s pitch sensitivity and helps increase downforce. downforce without adding drag. The wheelbase, meanwhile, has been lengthened to reduce loads on the rear tires and improve their consistency over long racing stints.
The driver is offset in the middle of the cockpit of the 911 GT3 R, this has allowed Porsche to add an ergonomic seat and an improved roll bar to meet the new FIA requirements for side impact. The cockpit features features proven in other motorsport categories, such as the 911 GT3 Cup’s 10.3-inch display and a multi-switch concept. Porsche Motorsport is now offering the new 911 GT3 R for 511,000 euros plus country-specific VAT and additional options.
